Stores gear up for battle

| ------------------------------------------ |
Chen
Liying SHANGHAI'S convenience stores are busy introducing new services as a
way to sharpen their edge as the market, crowded with several local firms, will
become even more competitive when strong overseas brands like FamilyMart and
7-Eleven enter in the near future, industry sources said. Shanghai Lianhua
Kuik Convenience Store Co Ltd, which owns nearly 2,000 stores in Shanghai and
nearby cities, said the company is in talks with local banks to launch new
financial services. "We've talked with local branches of China Everbright
Bank and the Bank of Communications to offer debit card application forms in our
stores," said Ding Mengxing, a company official. "Customers can also get the
latest information about the banks' products at our stores." Ding said the
service will start early next month. The company will lanch digital photo
printing, express delivery, as well as a helpline for tutors and domestic maid
services soon, he added. Shanghai Alldays Convenience Store Co Ltd said it
has begun to accept payment of public utility bills, and has allowed automatic
teller machines to be sited in its stores. It will expand such services to more
outlets this year. "It's the time for convenience store companies to build
up their brands and have more value-added services," said Wang Jinlong,
president of Shanghai Buddies CVS Co Ltd. "The market is very crowded and
competition will be intense when overseas companies like 7-Eleven enter the
market next year." There were 4,866 convenience stores in Shanghai at the
end of 2003, and analysts expect the number to hit 6,000 in three
years. Japan's FamilyMart Co said earlier this year it's investing 175
million yuan (US$21.1 million) to open 300 stores in Shanghai at the end of
2006. The world's biggest convenience chain, 7-Eleven, has said it will tap
the Shanghai market next year. 词汇快车 Underground Tutor battle
